History

In 350 BCE, Sigeion was a small yet strategically significant Greek city on the Troad coast, near the entrance to the Hellespont and close to ancient Troy. Originally founded by Aeolian Greeks, the city became a point of contention between Athens and nearby cities due to its critical position along key trade and military routes connecting the Aegean to the Black Sea. By this period, Sigeion was under Persian influence, following the empire’s control over much of Asia Minor, but it retained Greek cultural elements.
