History
Trajan (reigned 98–117 AD) was one of Rome's most celebrated emperors, known for his military conquests, administrative reforms, and architectural legacy. His reign marked the apex of the Roman Empire's territorial expansion and the relative stability of the Pax Romana.
Born in Hispania, Trajan was the first Roman emperor of non-Italian origin. Ascending the throne after Emperor Nerva's adoption, Trajan quickly secured his reputation as a capable leader. Militarily, he achieved significant victories, most notably in the Dacian Wars (101–102 AD, 105–106 AD), which brought the wealthy region of Dacia (modern Romania) into the empire. This conquest provided vast resources, including gold, boosting Rome's economy.
Domestically, Trajan expanded infrastructure, building roads, bridges, and monuments, including the iconic Trajan’s Column and Trajan's Forum in Rome. His social policies, such as the alimenta program, supported poor children.
Trajan’s rule embodied Rome’s ideals of strength and prosperity, and his leadership earned him the title "Optimus Princeps" (Best Ruler). He died in 117 AD, succeeded by Hadrian.
