History

Maximianus, co-emperor with Diocletian, ruled from 286 to 305 CE as part of the Tetrarchy, a system designed to bring stability to the Roman Empire through shared power. Assigned to govern the Western Empire, Maximianus defended Roman territories against Germanic tribes and rebellious forces, notably quelling the uprising of Carausius in Britain. He was known for his military skill and loyalty to Diocletian, playing a key role in stabilizing the western borders. Maximianus briefly retired in 305 but returned to power amid political upheaval, seeking to reclaim his authority. His final attempts to regain power failed, leading to his forced suicide in 310. Maximianus’s reign is noted for its effective defense of the Western Empire and contributions to the stability of the Tetrarchic system.
