History

Around 350 BCE, Kebren was a small Aeolian Greek city in the Troad, situated near the foothills of Mount Ida and the Kebren River. Its strategic location allowed it to benefit from the fertile lands and facilitated trade with nearby cities like Troy and Assos. Kebren maintained a degree of independence, though it was often influenced by larger powers in the region, particularly the Persian Empire, which controlled much of Asia Minor at the time. The city minted its own coins, frequently depicting Apollo or a ram, symbols of its local religious and cultural identity. Kebren’s economy was likely based on agriculture and small-scale trade, connecting it to the broader Aegean and Greek worlds. This period marked its final years of relative autonomy before Alexander’s conquest brought it under Macedonian control.
